The White House has hosted a Presidential Summit on Entrepreneurship in Washington, DC. Two Yemeni entrepreneurs participated in the summit.
In a press release of the US embassy in Sana’a, the summit focused on deepening ties between business leaders, foundations, and social entrepreneurs in the U.S. and Muslim-majority countries.Joining nearly 250 other successful entrepreneurs from over 50 countries, the two Yemeni entrepreneurs were Ms. Nameh Saeed al-Esha, the Director of Al-Wafa Women Association, an NGO which provides micro-loans and vocational training to women in Dhamar province and Mr. Ibrahim Ali Abulahoum, the Executive Director of Yemen Energy Services Company, which provides private sector solutions to reduce Yemen’s carbon emissions in the power and oil sectors. The US embassy said that this builds upon the commitment that President Barack Obama expressed in his June 2009 “New Beginning” speech in Cairo to enhance cooperation between the U.S. and the Muslim world on entrepreneurship, job creation and community development.Topics of discussion at the summit included technology and innovation, access to capital, unleashing women and youth entrepreneurship, mentoring and networking, fostering a culture of entrepreneurship, promoting and enabling business, and social entrepreneurship. Senior U.S. officials participating in the summit included President Obama, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, and Commerce Secretary Gary Locke. Many of the regions are being highly represented at the summit, such as Africa, the Middle East, and Southeast Asia, which have extraordinary youth populations.
