http://www.english.hadhramaut.info European Parliament meeting on Yemen [The Source: www.sabanews.net - 03/12/2009] A meeting was held on Thursday at the European Parliament that was devoted to discussing the developments in Yemen as well as ways to strengthen the Yemen-Europe ties. The meeting was chaired by Angelika Niebler, Chairwoman of the European Parliament Delegation for Relations with the Arab Peninsula.At the opening, a number of European lawmakers led by former speaker of the European Parliament Hans-Gert Poettering listened to the report of the European Commission on the developments in Yemen in various fields and the Yemeni-European ties over the last years.The report also dealt with the outcomes of the Yemen-EU Economic and Political Dialog Committees' meetings held in Brussels.In the meeting, Yemen's ambassador to the EU Abdul Wahab Mohammed al-Shawkani presented an interposition over the political and economic developments in Yemen as well as challenges facing the country, particularly those targeting its security and stability.He highlighted suspected moves by mercenaries seeking to separate the country through spreading hatred in some southern and eastern areas, pointing to the last Saleh's call on all political forces to tackle all national issues through dialog and under the republican system, unity and constitution umbrella.He also praised the EU recent decision to lift its diplomatic representation in Yemen to an embassy under a resident envoy and the EU full support for Yemen's unity and stability.Al-Shawkani also urged to continue efforts to develop the Yemeni-European cooperation on all fronts in the best interests of Yemen and Europe.Earlier, the European Commission announced 1.5 million euros in humanitarian aid for the refugees from the war in the north.The EC said in a statement the sum would be channeled through its humanitarian aid department to provide urgent requirements including tents, foodstuffs, healthcare and drinking water for almost 175.000 displaced people by the confrontations between the army and the Houthi insurgents in Saada and Amran provinces.
