Two people were killed and 22 others trapped†when a five-storey building under construction collapsed in Kiambu town.My brother is trapped inside," said one woman at the scene before she
broke down in tears. "I have been in touch with him and now he cannot
be able to respond to my calls.
The building caved in at 3pm while workers were busy at work. All those trapped were workers putting the final touches on the building. Unconfirmed reports also indicated that two contractors were among those trapped.
Two of the workers were pulled out minutes after 8pm on Monday night with broken legs and rushed to Nairobi for treatment. Some of those trapped kept calling their friends and relatives on mobile phones but time was clearly running out for them. Grief-stricken relatives kept vigil at the scene making frantic calls to those trapped inside.
""Two people were killed and 22 others trapped when a five-storey building under construction collapsed in Kiambu town.Regular Police, Administration Police, Kenya Air Force, Kenya Army and General Service Unit officers were at the scene conducting a joint rescue operation. The Kenya Red Cross Society was one of the first responders at the scene. As we went to press, about 30 workers were unaccounted for or feared trapped. Some were giving directions on their exact position in the collapsed building.Rescue teams from the Nairobi City Council Fire Brigade, KK Security and G4S joined the uniformed forces.Among the dead was one man who kept calling for help until his voice faded away. He took his last breath, when the early team of rescuers from the Red Cross arrived at the scene.Eyewitnesses said the house came tumbling down in the afternoon, causing a stir in the busy town.Rescue missionMembers of the public immediately rushed to the scene and started rescuing those they could reach."We have combined our forces so that we can be able to have a well-coordinated rescue mission and try as much as we can to save lives," said Police Commissioner Mathew Iteere. Head of Operations Julius Ndegwa and other senior officers accompanied him.Initially the crowd of people was uncontrollable but police quickly managed to cordon off the area. Two military helicopters were dispatched to the scene to airlift the injured for specialised treatment in Nairobi.A heavy traffic snarl built up on the Nairobi-Kiambu road. Iteere said his team would do all it can to ensure that lives are saved.Mr Josephat Mbii, one of the workers, was all prayers after surviving the tragedy by a whisker. He had just left to fetch water only to come back and find the structure he had helped set up in rubble."We were around 40 of us (casual labourers) in the building. I thank God I survived. Many of my colleagues are still trapped inside," he said.Mr Robert Makau had recruited part of the team that was trapped in the morning. He narrated to us how he was supervising the work only to see the building, which was to be named Kiwaka Plaza, come down."I recruited 22 people in the morning and a colleague of mine recruited another 11 later. They were like 40 people who were working inside by the time of the tragedy," added Makau.
