Deputy Speaker of the Parliament Mohammed al-Shaddadi said on Thursday that two draft anti-terrorism and weapons bills would be sent to the Parliament soon.
There are some notes and questions on the two draft anti-terrorism and weapons bills that must be answered by the government and then the parliamentarians would discuss and approve them", said the Yemeni official.Yemen's anti-weapons carrying campaign in major cities resulted in the seizure of thousands of weapons. Police have confiscated more than 88,000 firearms since the nationwide campaign to enforce a ban on carrying weapons in cities began in August 2007."More than 3,000 weapons have been seized in major cities of the country, and over 85,000 pieces were confiscated at checkpoints outside the capital Sana'a and other cities", Interior Ministry said.In 2005, the government embarked on a scheme to collect heavy weapons from tribal communities or arms traders, spending 44 million dollars to buy back weapons.Unofficial estimates put the number of firearms in circulation in Yemen at around 60 million. A UN-sponsored small arms survey concluded that Yemenis own between six and 17 million firearms. The law stipulates that Yemenis living in urban areas would have to obtain a licence for each weapon they possess and gave the interior ministry more power to control arms, since it reduced the number of people entitled to licences.
