consecutive term as speaker of the parliament, consolidating his position as one of the country's most influential politicians.Ninety of parliament's 128 members voted for the 71-year old, including the Future Movement of Sunni politician Saad al-Hariri, one of Berri's main opponents during a crisis that pushed Lebanon to the brink of civil war last year." Nabih Berri, speaker of parliament Addressing parliament after his election, Berri called on Lebanon's politicians to seize "the regional and international moment ... to strengthen Lebanon's peace and stability."
"This requires us to facilitate the establishment of a national government," said Berri, viewed as one of Syria's closest allies in Lebanon.
Lebanon’s sectarian system requires that the speaker of the parliament be Shiite and Berri has ran largely unopposed since he first held the post in 1992.
Saad Hariri, leader of the Future Movement and the March 14 alliance, supported Berri’s re-election. Hariri is expected to be named prime minister
Berri’s Amal movement was aligned with the opposition March 8 alliance, led by Christian leader Michel Aoun and Hassan Nasrallah’s Hezbollah party, and his re-election signals determination to work towards a unity government.
He had called Wednesday for the formation of a national-unity cabinet that would put an end to divisions between March 14 and the opposition March 8 forces.Berri voiced hope that his election would spearhead efforts "to reunite the Lebanese in a national government that would benefit both camps in times of crisis," he said in a statement to AFP Wednesday, adding that the goal was to form the new cabinet "as quickly as possible."
"If it were up to me, the cabinet would be formed in two weeks," he said.
