The Security Council’s 2140 Sanctions Committee discussed on Thursday in New York mechanisms to enforce the sanction measures on spoilers of the political settlement in Yemen.
On November 08, the Security Council’s 2140 Sanctions Committee designated three individuals, including former president and two Houthi leaders, as subject to the assets freeze and travel ban measures outlined, respectively, in paragraphs 11 and 15 of Security Council resolution 2140 (2014), adopted under Chapter VII of the Charter of the United Nations.
During the committee's meeting, which was attended by Yemen delegation, representatives of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries and the Security Council recently-elected members, Coordinator of the Panel of Experts of the Sanctions Committee, Alma Jadallah, talked about the actions that have been taken in order to apply sanctions against the three individuals who were included in the sanctions list.
She pointed out that she has communicated with a number of the concerned countries to know the actions taken to implement the sanctions, and all countries have voiced their commitment to the implementation, but they have already begun the necessary actions in this regard.
Acting permanent representative of Yemen to the United Nations ambassador Khaled al-Yamani expressed Yemen's appreciation for the Secuirty Council's efforts to support the transition process in Yemen.
"We confirm our strong support for their efforts aimed to ensure the success of the political transition in Yemen according to the GCC initiative and its time-bound mechanism so as to contribute to consolidating security and stability and punish all those involved in the obstruction of the peaceful political process", al-Yamani said.
For their part, representatives of the countries participating in the meeting reiterated that their countries are keen to proceed with punishing the political process spoilers in Yemen, stressing that the failure in the sanctions implementation is a violation of articles of Chapter VII of the UN Charter.
They pointed in this regard to the importance of accelerating the assets freeze and travel ban measures for those individuals included in the sanctions list.
