The Special Adviser to the UN Secretary-General on Yemen, ýJamal Benomar, has assumed a new round of negotiations in order to facilitate a peaceful solution to the current crisis in Yemen, at the request of the Yemeni parties, according to his office.
"Senior officials from the Yemeni Government and representatives of Ansarullah (Houthis) discussed the points of disagreement with the objective of reaching a viable political agreement that would enjoy national consensus as soon as possible in order to achieve security and stability," Benomar's office said in a statement issued late on Saturday.
"Noting the serious junction Yemen has reached, the Special Adviser expressed confidence that consensus can be reached by cooperating in a meaningful and constructive manner," the statement said.
Benomar further stressed that "the solution to all disputes and the completion of the political transition must be based on the Transition Agreement (GCC Initiative and Implementation Mechanism), the outcomes of the National Dialogue Conference, and Security Council resolutions 2014 (2011), 2051 (2012) and 2140 (2014)."
Benomar has met with President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi, Prime Minister Mohammad Salem Basendwah, Houthi representatives, and G-10 ambassadors in Sana'a.
